Call to Worship

One: Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing!

All: For the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones.

One: Break forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem;

All: for the Lord has comforted his people.

One: Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life.

All: Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”

A Modern Affirmation

Will you please join me in affirming our faith with A Modern Affirmation?

One: Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare:
All: We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love, whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to his children’s good.
We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of man, the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace, the ground of our hope, and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death.
We believe in the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we are kept in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find strength and help in time of need.
We believe that this faith should manifest itself in the service of love as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth.
Amen.

Scripture Reading

‘When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they could go and anoint Jesus’ dead body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they came to the tomb. They were saying to each other, “Who’s going to roll the stone away from the entrance for us?” Going into the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe seated on the right side; and they were startled. When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away. (And it was a very large stone!) But he said to them, “Don’t be alarmed! You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised. He isn’t here. Look, here’s the place where they laid him. Go, tell his disciples, especially Peter, that he is going ahead of you into Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you.” Overcome with terror and dread, they fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. [‘
