2019-01-06 Worship Order – Holy Communion

Call to Worship

One: The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
All: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
One: the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever;
All: the ordinances of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.
One: More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;
All: sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

The Apostles’ Creed, Ecumenical Version

All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading from Matthew 3:13-4:4, CEB

“13At that time Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River so that John would baptize him. 14John tried to stop him and said, “I need to be baptized by you, yet you come to me?”
15Jesus answered, “Allow me to be baptized now. This is necessary to fulfill all righteousness.”
So John agreed to baptize Jesus. 16When Jesus was baptized, he immediately came up out of the water. Heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and resting on him. 17A voice from heaven said, “This is my Son whom I dearly love; I find happiness in him.”
1Then the Spirit led Jesus up into the wilderness so that the devil might tempt him. 2After Jesus had fasted for forty days and forty nights, he was starving. 3The tempter came to him and said, “Since you are God’s Son, command these stones to become bread.”
4Jesus replied, “It’s written, People won’t live only by bread, but by every word spoken by God.”

Response to Scripture

One: This is the word of God for the people of God.
All: Thanks be to God.
