CALL TO WORSHIP
L: Loving God,
you call us to turn away from our own selfish interests,
to take up our cross, and to follow you.
P: To find our lives,
may we live them in service of your mission.
L: As we come before you this morning,
give us open hearts and open hands.
P: Make us eager to hear your voice
and seek your guidance.
L: Open our minds to your ever-present spirit
that is always moving within and around us
P: Open our spirits to your nudging
and open our lives to your love. Amen.
Affirmation of Faith
Will you please join me in affirming our faith from #888 in the United Methodist Hymnal?
This is the good news which we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are saved:
Christ died for our sins, was buried, was raised on the third day, and appeared first to the women, then to Peter and the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses.
Christ is the head of the body, the church, and by the blood of the cross reconciles all things to God.
We believe Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One of God, the first born of all creation, the firstborn from the dead, in whom all things hold together, in whom the fullness of God was pleased to dwell by the power of the Spirit.
SCRIPTURE READING Luke 14:25-33
A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, “If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.
“But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’
“Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him? And if he can’t, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the enemy is still far away. So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.
RESPONSE TO SCRIPTURE
One: This is the word of God for the people of God.
All: Thanks be to God.
